Is it possible to create an aerodynamic sock that is fundamentally just a really good sock ?

Josh collaborated with an Italian team renowned for producing some of the best socks in the world, and they use one of the most modern knitting machines available. The goal was to create a knitted sock that wouldn’t slip down, yet its smooth and rough surface combination would help airflow flow more efficiently around the calf.

The result is a sock whose aerodynamic properties match those of ribbed lycra cuff socks, while also retaining all the qualities you expect from a quality cycling sock.

After discovering the real advantage that an aerodynamic sock can provide, we presented our everyday use version of the Aero Sock . We received numerous great reviews about their comfort, but we also got many requests to create a sock that was even more aerodynamic and maximized the UCI limit.

Therefore, we extended the sock to 19.5 cm , precisely reaching the UCI maximum limit for most cyclists.

Technology

Special knitting equipment allows the sock to be crafted with a smooth front surface where the airflow travels in a laminar manner. Additionally, 3 rows of turbulence-inducing stripes are used, starting just before the airflow separation zone.

These turbulence stripes create small vortices in the boundary layer of air, giving the airflow extra energy and helping it remain attached to the surface of the leg for longer.

A greater attachment of airflow means a smaller pressure turbulence zone behind the leg. A smaller turbulence zone = less air resistance.

4–8 W of air resistance saved compared to standard socks, with results comparable to ribbed lycra surface socks of similar height.

Q-Skin Material

SILCA Aero Socks are made from Q-Skin – silver ion enriched polyamide, which possesses antibacterial and odor-reducing properties.

More importantly, this material boasts greater softness and better moisture control than many other yarns typically used in cycling sock production.
