TV

The TV category covers everything from compact kitchen sets to large 4K Smart TVs for the living room. It includes LED, QLED and OLED models from Samsung, LG, Philips, TCL, Hisense, Sony, Sharp, Xiaomi, Thomson and Manta.

How to choose a TV

Start with screen size. Measured in inches, it should match how far you sit from the screen: in a small room an oversized TV tires the eyes, while in a large living room a small one gets lost. A 4K picture stays sharp at closer range, so you can fit a bigger screen in the same room than with Full HD.

The look of the picture depends largely on panel type. In an OLED TV each pixel lights itself, so you get true blacks and excellent contrast in a dark room. QLED and standard LED sets use a backlight, which makes them brighter and better suited to sunny rooms. LED is also the most affordable option.

For gaming and sport, check the refresh rate. A 100 or 120 Hz panel shows fast motion more smoothly than 50/60 Hz, and a current-generation console needs an HDMI 2.1 port.

In daily use, a lot comes down to the Smart TV platform. Samsung runs Tizen, LG uses webOS, and many Sony, TCL and Philips models come with Google TV. Before buying, check that the streaming apps you use are available on that platform.

Frequently asked questions

Will the TV receive antenna and cable channels without a set-top box?

Yes, if it has DVB-T2 and DVB-C tuners. Pay channels may require a CI+ module or your provider's set-top box.

Which is better, OLED or QLED?

OLED gives deeper blacks and better contrast for watching films in the dark. QLED is brighter and works better in a well-lit room.

Is a 4K TV worth it if many programmes aren't broadcast in 4K?

Yes. The TV upscales regular content to its own resolution, and streaming services and game consoles already offer 4K content.

How do I mount a TV on the wall?

Find the VESA size on the back of the TV, for example 200×200 or 400×400 mm, and choose a wall bracket with the same pattern that is rated for the TV's weight.
