Is it possible to create an aerodynamic sock that is above all a very good sock?

Josh collaborated with an Italian team renowned for producing some of the best socks in the world and using one of the most modern knitting machines available. The goal was to create a knitted sock that wouldn't slip down, while the combination of its smooth and rough surfaces would help airflow to flow more efficiently around the calf.

The result is a sock whose aerodynamic properties are comparable to those of a textured lycra cuff sock, but also retains all the qualities expected from a quality cycling sock.

Upon realizing the real advantage that an aerodynamic sock could provide, we launched our everyday use Aero Sock. We received numerous great reviews about their comfort, but we also received many requests to create a sock that was even more aerodynamic and maximally utilized the UCI-defined limit.

Therefore, we extended the sock cuff to 19.5 cm, precisely hitting the UCI-defined maximum limit for most cyclists.

Technology

Special knitting equipment allows the sock to be made with a smooth front surface in the area where airflow flows laminar. There are also used 3 bands that create turbulence, starting right before the airflow separation zone.

These turbulence bands create small vortices in the boundary layer of the airflow, giving the airflow extra energy and helping it stay attached to the leg surface longer.

A greater airflow attachment means a smaller pressure turbulence zone behind the leg. A smaller turbulence zone = less air resistance.

4-8 W of air resistance is saved compared to standard socks, with results comparable to those of similar height textured lycra surface socks.

Q-Skin material

SILCA Aero Socks are made from Q-Skin - a polyamide enriched with silver ions, featuring antibacterial and odor-reducing properties.

More importantly, this material has greater softness and better moisture control than many other yarns commonly used in the production of cycling socks.
