Fully multi-coated lenses serve the primary purpose of maximizing the amount of light entering through the lens, ensuring that glare and shadows do not interfere with your view. PENTAX applies multiple layers of coatings to every element and prism surface throughout the Sport Optics series. This fully multi-coated optics ensures maximum light transmission, providing a clear and crisp view of the world.
New Enhanced Light Transmission Coatings
PENTAX binoculars elevate quality optics to the next level by applying a new, optimized film deposition technology on the objective and prism surfaces, increasing light transmission and creating bright images with accurate color reproduction.
Protective Lens Coating
All optical surfaces are delicate and need to be handled with care to avoid scratches. To make the Z and S series water-resistant binoculars* more durable, PENTAX has added a protective nano-technology coating that helps repel water, oil, dust, and dirt. This allows PENTAX binoculars to withstand the harshest viewing conditions.
BaK4 Prisms
Due to its exceptional refractive index, the BaK4 glass prism found in all PENTAX Sport Optics is highly regarded for its perfectly round exit pupil and clear, non-vignetting image.
Phase Correction
The complex optical design of the roof prism binoculars ensures a durable, compact, yet lightweight design, but requires a higher level of optical perfection. All roof prism binoculars in the range feature a phase correction coating to maximize image viewing quality.
PENTAX Waterproofing
The waterproof PENTAX products are completely sealed and purged with laboratory-grade nitrogen to ensure fog-resistant viewing in the harshest weather conditions. With a JIS Class 6 rating, PENTAX waterproof binoculars can be submerged up to 3 feet deep.
Unique Hydrophobic Coating
Water droplets on the lens negatively affect the light's ability to enter the lens. By using a unique water-repellent coating on all exterior lenses, we turn water droplets into “beads” of small deformed droplets. Deformed droplets cause less distortion and slide off the lens more easily. Your binoculars remain fully functional even in rain, snow, fog, or condensation from breathing.
Internal Focusing Optical Design
This complex optical design is crucial for low maintenance and longevity assurance. It avoids exposure to air particles and moisture, ensuring that no external influence enters the body and disrupts its operation.
Hybrid Aspherical Lens Elements
Edge-to-edge sharpness is a critical element for comfortable viewing. To achieve this, we use aspherical lens elements in our eyepieces. This special lens design minimizes aberration to a minimum. Hybrid aspherical lens elements have the added advantage of being lightweight and compact.
ED-Objective Lenses
To create top-quality binoculars, the greatest challenge is to avoid color errors (chromatic aberration). There are several ways to achieve this, but the best results can be obtained using ED (extra-low dispersion) glass in the objective lens. ED lenses have a high refractive index and minimal dispersion. The result is similar to using apochromatic lenses; but now only 2 lens elements are used. The advantage of this technology is clear; the binoculars are lighter and more compact.
Dielectric Coating
Dielectric prism coating enhances image colors. Several layers of surface correction coatings are “evaporated” onto the prism surfaces in a vacuum. This maximizes the quality of visible light in the color spectrum between infrared and ultraviolet as it passes through the glass.
Purged Nitrogen
Nitrogen is a chemical element and a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. It contains very little moisture, making it ideal for “purging” binoculars and observation areas of moisture-laden air, which is part of our environment. Due to the low moisture factor, nitrogen prevents condensation from forming on the internal optical instrument lenses during rapid temperature changes. Additionally, since nitrogen is blown into the optical device at slightly higher than atmospheric pressure, dust and other fine particles cannot enter the body.
Excellent Shock Resistance
The body is made of magnesium, which provides strength while keeping the binoculars lightweight. Additionally, the external rubber coating gives the binoculars excellent shock and impact resistance.
Long Eye Relief Design
All PENTAX sporting optics offer long eye relief, allowing the viewer to see the entire field of view clearly and effortlessly. This is especially beneficial for eyeglass wearers and allows for extended viewing without additional eye strain.
