To create a full-fledged network connection over fiber, you usually need two media converters - one on each side of the connection. This configuration is necessary if the two devices you want to connect (e.g. switches, routers, computers) only have standard RJ45 (Ethernet) ports and do not have built-in SFP ports. However, if one of the devices already has an SFP port and supports fiber modules (e.g. a modern switch), you only need to use one converter on the side of the device without an optical port .
