"Clans of Caledonia" is a medium complexity economic game set in 19th century Scotland. During this time, Scotland shifted from an agricultural to an industrial nation, heavily reliant on trade and exports. In later years, food production significantly increased to support population growth. Flax was increasingly replaced by cheaper cotton, and sheep farming received considerable attention. More and more distilleries were established, and whisky became the highest quality alcoholic beverage in Europe. Players represent historical clans with unique abilities and compete by producing, trading, and exporting agricultural goods and, of course, whisky! The game ends after five rounds. Each turn consists of three phases: 1. Players' turns 2. Production phase 3. Round scoring 1. Players take turns performing one of eight possible actions – from bidding to upgrading, trading, and exporting. When players run out of money, they end their turn and take their completion bonus. 2. In the production phase, each player collects core resources, refined goods, and cash from their production facilities built on the game board. Each built production facility allows income to be displayed on the player board. Refined goods require corresponding core resources. 3. Players receive VP depending on the current round's points. The game features eight different clans, a modular board with 16 configurations, eight ports, and eight circular scoring boards.
