Two XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements correct distortion and most types of aberration. The new optical design uses an ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass element to suppress chromatic aberration. Thanks to the original "Nano AR Coating II" on the surface of the lens, internal reflections that can cause flare and ghosting are greatly reduced.

Innovative XA (extreme aspherical) elements arranged in a new design, high-thrust XD linear motors and a compact ring aperture unit create a high-definition, high-resolution lens with an outer diameter of only 80.6mm, a length of 96.0mm, and weight - only 516 g. The combination of mobility and low light makes it an ideal choice for shooting from portraits to snapshots.

Precise, quiet AF, tracking for stills and videos

The lens' focus group is driven by high-thrust XD linear motors and a control algorithm for smooth focusing. Noise and vibration are reduced, so the autofocus works quietly - a big advantage when filming. Subjects are captured and tracked smoothly even when shooting at 120 frames per second or other high rates.

Intuitiveness conveys the creator's vision

Linear Response MF provides focusing on par with mechanical lenses and is sensitive and allows for focusing on movies. The aperture lock switch can be locked and the aperture ring locked at A for no change, or set manually from F1.4 to F16. Customizable dual focus support buttons and an AF/MF focus switch provide additional options.
