The first settlers arrived on Mars in 2037. Decades after Mars Base Camp was established, private exploration companies began working to create a self-sustaining colony.
As the chief astronaut of one of these companies, you want to pioneer the creation of the largest and most advanced colony on Mars. In the beginning, you are very dependent on supplies from Earth and have to travel a lot between the Mars space station and the surface of the planet. As your colony expands, your dependence on Earth materials will decrease as you build mines, power generators, water extractors, greenhouses, oxygen factories, and shelters. Your goal is to become an independent colony independent of any terrestrial organization.
This will require a careful balancing of the importance of water, air, energy and food – the things we need to survive.

The board game "On Mars" is played over several rounds. While in orbit, you can take blueprints, buy and develop technology, and take supplies from the warehouse. While on the planet's surface, you can construct buildings using your robots, upgrade these buildings using blueprints, command scientists and create new contracts, and explore the planet's surface using your rover. In the Shuttle phase, players can travel between a colony and a space station in orbit. To win the game, players must contribute significantly to the development of the first colony on Mars.
