A pulse oximeter, or fingertip oximeter, reads your blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse in a few seconds. How a pulse oximeter works

The sensor shines two beams of light through your finger and estimates how much oxygen your blood absorbs. The SpO2 percentage and pulse appear on the display within a couple of seconds. In a healthy person, saturation usually stays between 95 and 100%; lower readings are a reason to speak to a doctor. That is why people with asthma, COPD or heart conditions keep an eye on the figure, while athletes check it during a workout.

Beurer, Medisana and Promedix

Beurer and Medisana devices are valued for a clear display and steady measurement accuracy; many models use an OLED screen that flips the numbers the right way up on its own. Promedix is the simpler, more affordable option and is plenty for a first home device. All three give a fast, reliable reading; they differ mainly in price and extra features.

What to look for

For home use, a basic fingertip model with a clear readout and auto shut-off is enough. Check how easy the display is to read, how long the batteries last, and whether the clip fits a slim finger, a child's for instance. For regular health monitoring, a more precise Beurer or Medisana oximeter makes sense; for a general sense of how you feel, a budget model does the job.
