If you're looking for a reason to get in the saddle this autumn, the Tartu Bike Marathon is the perfect goal. It's the largest mountain bike marathon in the Baltics – and in 2026 the event gets even bigger.
What is the Tartu Bike Marathon?
The marathon was first held in 1998, and in 2026 it takes place for the 29th time. The start is given in Otepää and the finish awaits in the town of Elva. The marathon runs on 19–20 September 2026. From 2026 the event is part of the UCI Gravel World Series, so the best riders can qualify for the Gravel World Championships.
Distances and who they suit
The marathon offers four distances, so both first-time riders and experienced cyclists will find a suitable challenge:
• 21 km – for beginners and trying your first marathon.
• 40 km – for enthusiasts who already train a little and want a bigger effort.
• 86 km – for experienced riders; the classic long marathon distance.
• 126 km – the new gravel distance for serious riders and those chasing UCI points.
How to prepare
For a serious long distance, start preparing 3–4 months before the start. First build endurance with calm, long rides and add mileage gradually. In the final weeks add intervals and train climbs, because the terrain of southern Estonia is hilly. Practise technique too – descents and softer ground. Don't forget rest days, and test your race nutrition during training so you reach the start line without surprises.
How much does preparation cost?
The budget consists of several parts and depends on what you already have:
• Entry fee – depends on the distance and when you register (earlier = cheaper).
• Bike – the biggest cost; a good mountain bike is an investment for years.
• Helmet, gloves and clothing – safety and comfort on a long distance.
• Shoes and pedals – clipless pedals add efficiency.
• Nutrition – gels, drinks and bars for race day.
• Service – a bike check and tune-up before the start.
The bike determines the largest part of the budget, so choose a model that will also serve you after the marathon – on everyday forest rides.
Which bike to choose
The Tartu Bike Marathon is ridden on forest roads and trails, so the right choice is a mountain bike with 29-inch wheels – they roll smoothly over roots and rocks. On shorter distances a hardtail (rigid rear) will do, but on the long 86–126 km distances a light full-suspension bike is more comfortable: the suspension saves your body and keeps speed even on rough ground. A carbon frame reduces weight, and a 1× drivetrain is simple and reliable.
Our recommendation: Niner JET RDO 2-Star
The Niner JET RDO 2-Star (Magnetic Gray) is a perfect fit for the Tartu Bike Marathon.
Full-suspension 29er with an RDO carbon frame – light where needed, stiff where it counts.
CVA suspension: 120 mm rear and ~130 mm front – comfort on long distances without losing speed.
SRAM SX Eagle 1×12 gearing – simple and wide range for hilly terrain.
A bike that serves you both on the marathon and on everyday trail rides.
